چکیده

The peakedness of a random variable (RV) X about a point a is defined by Pa(x) = P(|X − a| ≤ x), x ≥ 0. A RV X is said to be less peaked about a than a RV Y about b, denoted by X ≤pkd(a,b) Y , if P(|X − a| ≤ x) ≤ P(|Y − b| ≤ x) for all x ≥ 0, i.e., |X − a| is stochastically larger than |Y − b|. These generalize the original definitions of Birnbaum (1948) [2] who considered the cases where X and Y were symmetric about a and b, respectively. Statistical inferences about the distribution functions of continuous X and Y under peakedness ordering in the symmetric case have been treated in the literature. Rojo et al. (2007) [12] provided estimators of the distributions in the general case and analyzed their properties. We show that these estimators could have poor asymptotic properties relative to those of the empiricals. We provide improved estimators of the DFs, show that they are consistent, derive the weak convergence of the estimators, compare them with the empirical estimators, and provide formulas for statistical inferences. An example is also used to illustrate our theoretical results. © 2012 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Peakedness and peakedness ordering in symmetric distributions

There are many ways to measure the dispersion of a random variable. One such method uses the concept of peakedness. If the random variable X is symmetric about a point μ, then Birnbaum (1948) defined the function Pμ(x) = P (|X − μ| ≤ x), x ≥ 0, as the peakedness of X. If two random variables, X and Y , are symmetric about the points μ and ν, respectively, then X is said to be less peaked than Y...

Intradimensional Single-Peakedness and the Multidimensional Arrow Problem

Arrow's account (1951/1963) of the problem of social choice is based upon the assumption that the preferences of each individual in the relevant group are expressible by a single ordering. This paper lifts that assumption and develops a multidimensional generalization of Arrow's framework. I show that, like Arrow's original framework, the multidimensional generalization is affected by an imposs...

The Geometry of Black’s Single Peakedness and Related Conditions

“Black single peakedness” is a widely used restriction imposed on profiles. By using geometry to analyze all possible three candidate profiles satisfying this constraint, we discover that it allows subtle and disturbing election behavior. The same analysis is applied to the related profile constraints where some candidate never is top-ranked and some candidate never is bottom ranked.

Comparing probability measures using possibility theory: A notion of relative peakedness

Deciding whether one probability distribution is more informative (in the sense of representing a less indeterminate situation) than another one is typically done using well-established information measures such as, e.g., the Shannon entropy or other dispersion indices. In contrast, the relative specificity of possibility distributions is evaluated by means of fuzzy set inclusion. In this paper...

Burstiness Descriptors of Traffic Streams: Indices of Dispersion and Peakedness

The burstiness of a traffic stream can have a profound effect on performance statistics in the queue to which the stream is offered, such as line length, waiting times and blocking probabilities. Mathematical descriptors quantifying burstiness should be versatile enough to characterize burstiness, yet analytically tractable to permit numerical calculation. This paper surveys two important descr...
